“Tithe” is a word that comes to us from tēotha, which means “tenth” in Old English. The word itself is a reminder that God requires us to return to Him the first 10 percent of all our earnings, as all abundance comes from Him in the first place. In a spiritual sense, the tithe is a practice of gratitude.
Interestingly enough, the first tithe actually appears in the book of Genesis – “And he blessed him and said, ‘Blessed be Abram by God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!‘ And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.“ (Gen. 14:19-20)
Because money can be such an emotional subject for everyone, the act of tithing the first tenth, and then most likely following up that with additional donations, is a pretty strong act of faith. It is an act that says you don’t mind letting money flow away from you because you know it will also flow back to you. It is an act that says you trust God to take care of your needs, as He has promised to do. In addition, allowing a tenth of your earnings flow into the church is a fantastic community-building act that allows you to help care for those who need a little something extra. It allows you to take care of others in your community, which returns blessings to you.
“Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God, and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God’s house. And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.“ (Gen. 28:20-22)
